Fir trees are a stunning addition to any landscape, belonging to the pine family (Pinaceae) and the genus Abies. With their short, flat evergreen needles and conical shape they offer dense foliage that enhances the beauty of their surroundings. Known for their resilience and adaptability, fir trees are a popular choice for both ornamental and privacy purposes. Found across North and Central America, Europe and Asia, these trees bring a touch of nature's elegance to forests and gardens.

 

Preferred soil conditions:

Moist, well drained organic soil types. Small amount of clay acceptable.

No standing water for lengths of time. 

Mulch after planting and water as necessary for the first year and periods of drought thereafter.

Balsam Fir

Balsam Fir is a stunning North American fir tree, thriving across eastern and central Canada and the north-central/northeastern United States, extending down to West Virginia. With a height that can reach up to 65 feet, these trees are characterized by their narrow crowns and dense, dark green needles. For thousands of years, Americans have utilized Balsam Fir for various medicinal and therapeutic purposes. Let's not forget that the Balsam Fir is the Christmas tree of choice by Maine and  New England!

Just like many species, hybrids and unique variations can emerge naturally, whether from chance seedlings or genetic mutations known as "sports."
